SHARING RESOURCES

1° CLASSIFIED

Author: Audun Rikardsen (NO)

Location: Tromsø, Norway

Description: During winter in northern Norway, large biomasses of herring have overwintered in fjords during 3-4 dark winter months in recent years. This has attracted hundreds of whales and fishing vessels. The killer whales have learned the sound of the boats when they haul their herring bag nets and get attracted to the boats in hopes of an easy meal of leftover herring. A single exposure where Audun has used a self-made underwater housing.

SCREAM OF DEATH

2° CLASSIFIED

Author: Antonius Andre Tjiu (ID)

Location: South Borneo

Description: The snake in this photograph is curled in defense, knowing that its best chance for survival lies in attacking the much larger Crested Serpent Eagle.

LIONESS HUNT

3° CLASSIFIED

Author: Pierluigi Rizzato (IT)

Location: Serengeti NP - Tanzania

Description: In late afternoon, when the sun light is rapidly fading, a lioness is crawling in the grass while getting closer to a herd of Thomson Gazelles. Then, all of a sudden, it springs and attacks.

LEAP OF FAITH (JUMP OF THE WILDEBEEST)

3° CLASSIFIED

Author: Nicole Cambré (BE)

Location: Tanzania (Northern Serengeti, Mara river)

Description: This wild beast did not wait for its turn to cross the Mara River and jumped over all of the others. The image was caught at the instant in which the wild beast fell.

CAPE BUFFALO WITH YELLOW-BILLED OXPECKER

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Barbara Fleming (US)

Location: Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Description: I was photographing a herd of Cape Buffalo when I became fascinated by an active Yellow-billed Oxpecker flying on and around all the Buffalo. The challenge became to capture an Oxpecker in a shot as it came in for a landing and I was thrilled that I was able to capture this image.

TURTLES IN THE SUN RAYS

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Greg Lecoeur (FR)

Location: Tenerife

Description: During a scuba dive in Tenerife, I crossed the path of these 2 green turtles. It was early morning and sunbeams pierced the surface. I adjusted the setting of my camera and waited for the turtles to come close enough to take their photo.

ORANGUTAN IN THE RAIN

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Andrew Suryono (ID)

Location: Bali, Indonesia

Description: I was taking pictures of some Orangutans in Bali when it started to rain. Just before I put my camera away, I saw this Orangutan take a taro leaf and put it on top of its head to protect himself from the rain, and I immediately caught the moment.

LEAP ABOUT LIFE AND DEATH

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Xiaoliang Liu (CN)

Location: Alaska Kent National Reserve, USA

Description: I was planning to shoot migratory salmons swimming upstream that encountered brown bears on the way to spawn. It took me two years to succeed. The plan was a failure in 2013, and so I returned in 2014. I was waiting in the Alaska Kent National Reserve for four days and was finally able to get satisfactory images at last.

PILOTS

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: David Robinson (AE)

Location: Djibouti

Description: During Djibouti's winter season, juvenile whale sharks aggregate in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura. As part of a research team studying these juvenile sharks, I had the opportunity to photograph them and their associated fauna. Here, a school of golden pilot fish accompanies a juvenile whale shark and forms a memorable and colourful line in front of the shark's mouth.

MOMENT OF LIFE

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Roie Galitz (IL)

Location: Svalbard

Description: The Polar Bear waited for hours and days near the seal's breathing hole, and I waited with her. In the exact moment the seal came out for air she caught it by the neck and pulled it up. She looks as if she is hugging the seal and the little cub is looking on from behind, but this bear hug is "unusual".

HELP ME

HONORABLE MENTION

Author: Audun Rikardsen (NO)

Location: Tromsø, Norway

Description: A humpback whale had entangled itself in the internet cable of the entire village where Audun lives. The whale was desperate and struggled for its life for over 24 hours. Eventually the whale was released with a team coordinated by the coast guard, fire-fighters, Audun and his friends. A life was saved, but three districts were without internet and phone for three weeks. This is a single exposure using a self-made underwater housing.
